Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) and sophomore lacrosse standout
Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) were honored Wednesday (March 10) as the Western New England College Male and Female Athletes-of-the-Week.
Griglun, a first baseman/designated hitter, hit .533 (8-for-15) with 10 runs-batted in as the Golden Bears opened their season with three victories on Long Island. He went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs, and three RBI in an 11-1 win over Farmingdale State (the defending NCAA Division III New York Regional Tournament champion) in the season opener. Griglun then went 5-for-10 in a doubleheader sweep over St. Joseph’s-Long Island (17-5, 10-5). He had three hits in the opener and five RBI, which was highlighted by a three-run homer. Griglun is a Sport Management major.
Toomy, an attacker/midfielder, fired in five goals and had two caused turnovers as Western New England College defeated Mount Holyoke (22-13) for its first win of the season. She also compiled two caused turnovers and had a ground ball against the Lyons. Toomy leads the team in goals (10) through three contests. She is a Psychology major.
