Western New England College opens season with big win over host Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Junior Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, CT) pitched six strong innings and senior first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) collected three hits with three runs-batted-in as the Western New England College baseball team opened its season with an impressive 11-1 victory over Farmingdale State Saturday afternoon (March 6).

Michaud allowed only five hits with no walks and two strikeouts while giving up an unearned run.

Freshman Kevin Jefferis (Cheshire, CT) went the final three innings permitting only one hit with a walk and three strikeouts in a successful college debut.

The Golden Bears led 2-0 in the third inning following a RBI double by Griglun before breaking the game open with seven runs in the sixth. Griglun again had the big hit with a two-run single.

Senior center fielder Steve Kearney (Glastonbury, CT) also had three hits with a run, and RBI.

Junior third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) added a single, triple, two RBI, and scored once while sophomore right fielder Tom Bouvier (East Longmeadow, MA) had a pair of hits and a RBI.

Senior shortstop Justin Walz (Groton, CT) walked twice and scored two runs.

Farmingdale State junior designated hitter Matt Weingartner (Westbury, NY) scored the Rams only run on a double steal in the bottom of the sixth. 

Senior pitcher Ian Solomon (Northport, NY) went 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four.

The Rams, who captured the NCAA Division III New York Regional Tournament title last spring, fall to 4-9 after dropping their home opener.
